From the Industry Experts:
Although we are not practicing alchemy, Ensinger is creating some very high-end and market-specific products utilizing Victrex® PEEK as the building block resin. Adding a pinch of carbon or glass fibers for strength, a touch of solid lubricants like PTFE for enhanced wear properties, a dash of silver powder to kill bacteria, and the “extra mile” to certify product to guiding regulatory requirements, Modern Plastics is ready to hear your specific design needs to create new TECAPEEK® formulations or offer the appropriate formulations that are already available in stock. These include:
- TECAPEEK™ MT: Stocked in 5 colors and certified for biocompatibility for medical device applications, this product is intended for medical instrumentation.
- TECAPEEK™ Classix™: Stocked in an off white color and supported with biocompatibility testing by resin lot, this material is intended for temporary implants including dental abutments and healing caps. It is also available in black.
- TECAPEEK™ CF30: 30% carbon fiber filler is added for added stiffness and strength. It is also available as a compression molded shape which is designated as XP-98. This material is radiolucent and fits the needs of surgical targeting fixtures.
- TECAPEEK™ PVX: This is a premium bearing material with PV values as high as 30,000 and excellent wear resistance.
Processing provides us with additional flexibility to provide the shape that best fits the application. Extruded shapes of rod, sheet and tube are a given, but Ensinger can provide it in wide ranges such as extruded tubes with an outer diameter as small as .200” to as large as 14 1/4”. The compression molding process at Ensinger Special Polymers, which is located in Houston, Texas, can produce small quantities of rod, plate, and tube and money saving near net shapes such as the one depicted in the photo. Talk about custom formulations in PEEK. Ensinger Special Polymers currently offers 12 blends with minimums as low as one square foot in thickness greater than ¼”. Get creative and call Modern Plastics with your design challenge!

TECAPEEK™ (polyetheretherketone)
is a unique semi-crystalline, high temperature engineering thermoplastic that is an excellent material for a wide spectrum of applications where thermal, chemical, and combustion properties are critical to performance.
Especially significant in this regard is TECAPEEK™'s ability to retain its flexural and tensile properties at very high temperatures–in excess of 250°C (482°F). The addition of glass fiber or carbon fiber reinforcements enhances the mechanical and thermal properties of the basic TECAPEEK™ material.
Download the TECAPEEK™ data sheet.
TECAPEEK™ properties:
- Excellent flexural, impact, and tensile characteristics
- Very high continuous working temperature
- Very high heat distortion temperature
For unreinforced TECAPEEK™, the HDT is 160°C (320°F). The addition of 30% reinforcement results in a dramatic increase to 315°C (599°F).
- Exceptional chemical resistance.
TECAPEEK™ is insoluble in all common solvents.
- A superior dielectric at high temperatures and frequencies.
- Good radiation resistance.
TECAPEEK™ exhibits superior resistance to high doses of gamma radiation.
- Outstanding wear and abrasion resistance.
- Low smoke and toxic gas emissions.
- Excellent hydrolysis resistance.
TECAPEEK™ has an excellent resistance to hydrolysis in boiling water and superheated steam (sterilization/auto clavability) at temperatures in excess of 250°C (482°F).
TECAPEEK™'s exceptional property profile enables it to be utilized in many of the most critical areas in general industry, as well as in the automotive, marine, nuclear, oil well, electronics, medical and aerospace fields.

TECAPEEK™ Classix™ is an ultra-high performance biocompatible thermoplastic, the mechanical properties of which are comparable with those of TECAPEEK™ and TECAPEEK™ MT. Polyaryletherketone belongs to the group of polymers which have the best chemical resistance and biocompatibility. It shows a particularly good combination of strength, rigidity, toughness and hardness, which proves ideal for medicinal-technical applications.
The polymer can be processed and shaped using customary processes, such as injection molding, extrusion, machining and compression molding. This gives manufacturers of medical products and applications wide-ranging flexibility in design and manufacture.
Download TECAPEEK™ Classix™ technical properties information.
Download the Modern Plastics Medical Plastics Brochure.
TECAPEEK™ Classix™ properties profile:
- Extremely good chemical resistance
- Mechanical strength
- Dimensional stability
- Excellent abrasion and impact strength
- Can be frequently and repeatedly sterilized with conventional methods (hot steam, gamma
radiation, plasma and ethylene oxide) without interfering with the mechanical properties
- Extreme resistance to hydrolysis, even at high temperatures
- Can be produced as thin wall tubes
- Standard color is currently creamy-white, further colors and modifications upon request.
TECAPEEK™ Classix™ is suitable for medical applications requiring 24 hours to 30 day maximum blood contact. It is unsuitable, however, for applications in permanent implants, which are in contact with blood or tissue for longer than 30 days. For requirements which go beyond this, PEEK OPTIMA™ is available from
INVIBIO® Ltd.

TECAPEEK™ PVX is an
ultra high performance bearing material that incorporates the properties of a premium polymetric matrix material with optimum levels of specific wear
enhancing additives. This formulation raises the continuous use temperature by approximately 40°F and increases the limiting PV while maintaining
excellent chemical resistance. When used as a nonmetallic bearing, TECAPEEK™ PVX offers a superb range of tribiological performance. It is designed to run at high loads and speeds, in hostile environments, either dry or lubricated.
Download TECAPEEK™ PVX .pdf data sheet.
TECAPEEK™ PVX Properties:
- Excellent high temperature performance.
Continuous use temperture over 450°F.
- Flammability is UL94 V-O with a low limiting O2
index (-40%) and very low smoke generation
- Can be used dry against hard or soft mating
surfaces
- Excellent weather resistance
- Resistant to gamma radiation
- Complies with specific provisions of
ASTM D6262-98
- Available in a wide range of sizes, extruded in rod
and plate for subsequent machined parts
TECAPEEK™ PVX’S exceptional properties make it an ideal material for bearing surfaces in the most demanding applications and in the harshest conditions. Industrial, automotive, marine, nuclear, petroleum and aerospace industry applications realize great benefits from its use.
