Set Yourself Apart with RADEL® R
Sterilizeable Plastics
Today more than ever, OEMs
in the healthcare industry are looking for ways to differentiate their
brands and their products. That's where RADEL® R sterilizeable plastics
from Solvay Advanced Polymers can help. Now you can get the look you
want—and the performance you need—for a host of reusable medical and
dental applications.
The Look You Want
Whether you want to use colors to distinguish your brand or create
a fresh, exciting look for a new product line, custom-colored RADEL®
R sterilizeable plastics are a perfect fit. OEMs can match their corporate
logo color or create a new color scheme that's distinctive to a specific
product line. Colors are available in both opaque and transparent
plastics.
RADEL® R plastics can be processed using standard methods for injection
molding, extrusion and blow molding. Shapes can be machined for both
prototype evaluation and production components. Plus, you can do most
post-fabrication techniques such as ultrasonic welding, adhesive bonding,
laser marking and silk-screen printing as well as heat staking, threading
and machining. The versatility of RADEL® R plastics allows you to
create custom designs that are more cost-effective and lighter weight
than the similar metal designs.

Sulfone Processing Guide.
The Performance You Need
RADEL® R polyphenylsulfone is a high-performance polymer that can
withstand more than a thousand cycles of disinfection and steam sterilization
without any significant loss of properties. This combined with its
superior toughness and ability to be molded into complex shapes gives
you the performance you need for demanding healthcare applications.

bulletin – Compatibility of RADEL® R with Steam Sterilization.
RADEL® R plastics are compatible with virtually all common sterilization
methods, commonly used enzymatic washing agents and disinfecting agents.
RADEL® R plastics are also compliant with U.S. Pharmacopeia requirements
for Class VI.

RADEL® R polyphenylsulfone
For severe service applications requiring repeated sterilization or
uncompromising toughness, RADEL® R polyphenylsulfone really stands
out. With a high heat deflection temperature of 207°C (405°F), it
can withstand continuous exposure to heat and still absorb tremendous
impact without cracking or breaking. It is inherently flame retardant
and offers exceptional resistance to bases and other chemicals.

Colored RADEL® R 5100 (opaques) and R 5800 (transparents)
are used in latches to add visual excitement to lids for both
plastic and metal sterilization case systems.
RADEL® R 5100 is the standard
injection molding grade of RADEL R and is commonly used in injection
molded sterilization case lids and latches.

RADEL® R-5000 and R-5100 NT15 resins can be readily injection molded
in most screw injection molding machines to close part tolerances.
Stock temperature requirements will generally range from 680° to 735°F
(360° to 390°C), depending on mold design and the type of equipment
being used. A general purpose 2.2:1 compression screw is recommended,
with minimum back pressure. Mold temperatures of at least 280°F(138°C)
are suggested. For long-flow or thin-walled parts, or where low residual
stresses are required use mold temperatures as high as 300° to 325°F
(150° to 165°C).

RADEL® R 5500 is the general purpose
extrusion grade of RADEL ® R that is ideal for the extrusion of shapes
such as rod and sheet as well as near net shapes. Colored rod stock
can be machined into surgical and dental instrument handles or orthopedic
provisional trials (as shown).
RADEL ® R-5500 resin is easily extrudable into sheet, film, profile
or tubing. Extrusion temperature ranges are broad, depending on thickness
of sheet or profile being extruded. Typical temperature profiles for
extrusion range from 640°F (340°C) to 730°F (395°C) on the barrel.
Useful adapter and die temperatures are in the range 620°–700°F (325°
-370°C) with melt temperatures being in the range 650°–750°F (345°–400°C).
RADEL ® R resins are stable thermoplastics. Accordingly, up to 25%
clean reground R-5500 resin, in a mix with new material, can be used
with little, if any, property effects except for a slight darkening
in color. Udel® polysulfone is recommended as a start-up and purge
resin for extrusion of RADEL ® R resins.
