The
Nylatron® Family of Machineable Nylons
Nylatron®
nylon machineable shapes and parts have provided machinery builders
(OEMs) and maintenance operations (MRO or users) the standard by which
tough, durable wear components such as bearings, bushings, gears and
sprockets have been judged for the past 30 years. Nylatron® wear pads
can be found in the extending booms of most telescoping-boom, mobile
cranes. Nylatron® bushings can be found at pivot points in construction
equipment ranging from man-lifts to heavy duty dump trucks to excavators
to agricultural equipment such as spreaders and seeders. Machined
Nylatron® gears have been used in braiding machinery, machine tools
and even the newest automotive electronic power steering systems.
Nylatron® nylon sheaves are carrying the load at the boom point of
nearly every mobile hydraulic crane and carrying the load of the world's
largest locomotives eliminating metal to metal rubbing in the trucks
of passenger and freight locomotives.
Introduced by the Polymer Corporation in the early 1950's as a molybdenum
disulfide filled nylon 6/6, it was the first widely recognized wear
resistant nylon. It found many new uses and was along with Nylon 101
used often for both machined and injection molded parts. During the
1960's with the development of monomer cast, nylon shapes, the Nylatron®
family expanded to include nylon-6 chemistries. These monomer cast
materials allowed engineers to now consider Nylatron® for parts weighing
as much as 1000 lbs. Gears up to 8 feet in diameter found use in paper
mills. Large bearings and couplings used in the steel industry kept
pushing the size limits. If a part could be machined, Polymer found
a way to cast it into a shape.
During the years to follow, Nylatron® grew into a family of more than
10 wear-enhanced, nylon materials. The Nylatron® family of machineable
nylons is now offered by Quadrant Engineering Plastic Products. These
materials are manufactured to global quality standards and supplied
around the world via a network of plastic distributors and fabricators.
Modern Plastics is one of those distributors offering the complete
line of Nylatron® materials for your most challenging wear parts.

Applications in Industrial and Heavy Equipment
Sheaves, wheels, rollers and guides
Nylatron® GSM is the most widely used Nylatron® material. Based
on nylon 6, GSM is a cast nylon that is specially
formulated to provide a balance of wear resistance, strength and toughness.
It contains molybdenum disulfide and is dark grey in color. It is
chosen when durability of a component is critical and unit cost important.
It is the standard for custom cast parts such as sheaves and many
other parts including many railroad parts. No other material can make
the claims that GSM can concerning durability in use.
Download the Nylatron® GSM Nylon, Type
6, MoS2 filled, cast .pdf datasheet.
Download the Nylatron® GSM Blue Nylon,
Type 6, oil and MoS2 filled, cast .pdf datasheet.
Nylatron® GSM is cast as 48" x120" sheets in thickness from .25-2";
in 24x48" sheets up to 4" thickness; rods and disks up to 48" diameter;
tubes ranging in OD/ID combinations from 2x1" to 96x90"; and custom
parts and near net shapes. More Nylatron® GSM is stocked than any
other nylon grade.
If you are looking for a strong, tough, (i.e. durable) wear-resistant
material to make a load bearing component from, GSM is a great starting
point. If you are looking for the toughness of GSM with a slightly
lower coefficient of friction, consider molybdenum disulfide plus
oil grade Nylatron® GSM-Blue.

Lube-free
gears, sprockets and bushings
Nylatron® NSM, developed in the mid-1980's, is the highest performing wear-enhanced nylon
offered in all shapes. It has been formulated with a proprietary
solid lubricant designed to reduce the surface friction and maximize
the load-velocity limits for plane bearings and bushings. The wear
rate for NSM is considered the lowest of all nylons, extruded or
cast, enabling NSM parts to last up to 10 times longer than parts
machined from other nylons. The enhanced wear properties of NSM
enable many parts to run without external lubrication (greaseless)
and provide higher levels of safety for those applications in which
grease is desired but not always guaranteed to be present. It typically
offers 5 times more load x velocity (PV) than Nylatron GSM.

solid lubricant filled, cast .pdf data sheet.
NSM pivot bushings and dynamic seals offer construction and agricultural
machinery grease free operation with almost no measurable wear after
years of service.
Nylatron® NSM gears run at lower temperatures than gears machined
from other nylon compounds thereby doubling the torque and horsepower
capability of the gear.

Stick-slip free wear pads
Nylaton® 703XL, introduced in 2002 is the newest material developed
specifically for wear pads used in telescoping booms and axles. 703XL is type 6 cast nylon compounded
with a series of solid lubricants in order to eliminate stick-slip
tendencies common to many nylon-based wear pad materials. This grade
offers the lowest coefficient of friction and a static and dynamic
COF that is nearly identical. This consistent COF is a benefit to
linear motion applications requiring precision of motion and location.

The relative softness of 703XL also makes it a very quiet material
in service and makes it ideal for mating against soft surfaces including
those that are painted. It has found successful use in the world's
best-designed, construction and agricultural equipment as custom cast
and machined parts.

Applications
in Food and Packaging Equipment
Star wheels, bearings and bushings, conveyor guides, gears, augers
and timing screws
Nylatron® has long been used in high speed packaging equipment when
strength and abrasion resistance are critical. Natural, nylon 6 based
MC907 is the original FDA- compliant nylon shape. Nylatron® LFG is an oil-filled cast nylon
based material offering a lower COF and non-stick surface properties.
Nylatron® is natural in color and contains an FDA compliant oil-based
lubricant making it suitable for applications involving direct food
contact. Both LFG and MC907 are available in custom shapes and parts.
Download the Nylaton® LFG .pdf data sheet.
If your application involves food contact and you are looking for
a higher strength, abrasion resistant material Nylatron® LFG and MC907
are worth considering. Both materials offer 4 times greater strength
than UHMW and 4 times better wear and abrasion resistance than acetal
parts.
