From the president:

It was during the summer month of July, 1945, when Joseph C. Carbone opened up what was then known as the “Modern Glass” Company. A small, obscure company located in a garage behind a two-family home on the corner of State Street and Howard Avenue in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

That was 60-years ago this month and with three family ownership generations later, “Modern Plastics” has grown into one of the premier high-performance plastics stock shapes distributors in the world.

In the coming months, Modern Plastics will unveil a “first” in plastics distribution which will expand our product offerings and present our customers with an extraordinary new means of purchasing high-performance plastic polymers with all of the traditional Modern Plastics value-added services.

Understanding and reacting to customer needs, requests and requirements is something that Modern Plastics takes very seriously and is able to respond to very quickly. In fact, our business model has been built around this very principle.

If you're a new customer or one that's been with us for many years, please let us know how we can continue to provide you with improved services, better product offerings, or just a simple suggestion on how we can make it easier for you to procure the products you need as painlessly as possible!

In fact, we'd like to hear from you so much on this issue, that we're going to give a way a FREE Garmin GPS 2620 Street Pilot ($1,200 Retail Value) system for your automobile to the single improvement idea and suggestion that Modern Plastics implements on a Corporate basis.

to enter your name and suggestion (and view contest rules) and we'll announce the sole winner in our September 2005 issue of this very newsletter.

"Whether it is their early adoption of barcoding all of their product for guaranteed traceability, their innovation in being the first US distributor to gain ISO 9000 certification, their significant investment in training of all their employees or their innovative use of e-commerce to allow them to service customers located throughout the world - Modern Plastics is truly one of the premier plastics distributors in the world."

    Sincerely,
    A Satisfied Customer

Ketron® PEEK-HPV

Modern Plastics offers the Ketron® PEEK family of materials which is based on polyetheretherketone resin. This semi-crystalline advanced material exhibits a unique combination of high mechanical properties, temperature resistance and excellent chemical resistance, making it the most popular advanced plastics material.

Ketron® PEEK-HPV (PEEK+CF+PTFE+graphite) (black)

The addition of carbon fibers, PTFE and graphite to virgin PEEK results in a Ketron® PEEK "Bearing Grade". Its excellent tribological properties (low friction, long wear and high Pressure-Velocity capabilities) make this grade especially suited for bearing and wear applications.

Download the Ketron® PEEK-HPV.pdf datasheet here.

Ketron® main characteristics:

  • Very high max. allowable service temperature in air (250°C continuously, up to 310°C for short periods)
  • High mechanical strength, stiffness and creep resistance, also at elevated temperatures
  • Excellent chemical and hydrolysis resistance
  • Excellent wear and frictional behavior (particularly Ketron® PEEK-HPV and PEEK-CA30)
  • Very good dimensional stability
  • Inherent low flammability and very low levels of smoke evolution during combustion
  • Good electrical insulating and dielectric properties (except for Ketron® PEEK-HPV and PEEK- CA30)
  • Excellent resistance against high energy radiation

Celazole® PBI

Celazole® PBI is the highest performance engineering thermoplastic available today. It offers the highest heat resistance and mechanical property retention over 400°F of any unfilled plastic. It has better wear resistance and load carrying capabilities at extreme temperatures than any other reinforced or unreinforced engineering plastic.

Read the Celazole® PBI datasheet here
.

As an unreinforced material, Celazole® PBI is very "clean" in terms of ionic impurity and it does not outgas (except water). These characteristics make this material very attractive to semiconductor manufacturers for vacuum chamber applications. Celazole® PBI has excellent ultrasonic transparency which makes it an ideal choice for parts such as probe tip lenses in ultrasonic measuring equipment.

Celazole® PBI is also an excellent thermal insulator. Other plastics in melt do not stick to PBI. These characteristics make it ideal for contact seals and insulator bushings in plastic production and molding equipment.

A partial list of proven applications:

High Heat Insulator Bushings
Bushings used in hot runner plastic injection molds made of Celazole® PBI allow the plastic being molded to remain in melt as the part "freezes" in the cool mold. Bushings last longer and ease clean up since hot molten plastics do not stick to PBI. (Prior materials: Vespel* PI, Ceramic)

Electrical Connectors
For an extra margin of safety, an aircraft engine manufacturer replaced connectors exposed to temperatures over 400°F (205°C) with Celazole® PBI. (Prior material: Vespel* PI)

Ball Valve Seats
Seats manufactured from Celazole® PBI excel in high temperature fluid handling service. (Prior material: Metal)

Acetron® GP

Modern Plastics offers Acetron® GP, a general purpose acetal; the only porosity-free acetal product available today. Investments in process technology by Quadrant EPP now provide the performance and machinability of acetal without center core porosity. An in-line photometric quality procedure assures every plate and rod is porosity-free as measured by Quadrant EPP's quick check dye penetrant test. Acetron® GP natural is FDA, USDA, NSF, Canada AG and 3A-Dairy compliant.

Download the Acetron® GP data sheet here.

Acetal provides high strength and stiffness coupled with enhanced dimensional stability and ease of machining. As a semi-crystalline material, acetal is also characterized by a low coefficient of friction and good wear properties –– especially in wet environments.

Because acetal absorbs minimal amounts of moisture, its physical properties remain constant in a variety of environments. Low moisture absorption results in excellent dimensional stability for close-tolerance machined parts. In high moisture or submerged applications, acetal bearings outperform nylon 4 to 1. Acetal is ideally suited for close tolerance mechanical parts and electrical insulators which require strength and stiffness. It also offers resistance to a wide range of chemicals including many solvents.

IntePro® Storm Protection Panels

Modern Plastics now offers one of the strongest, light weight plastic substrates available in the industry for home, office, factory and business protection in the event of severe storm and weather activity. Our IntePro® 16mm Corrugated Polypropylene sheet has successfully passed and is compliant with ASTM E1996 (Standard Specification for Performance of Exterior Windows, Curtains Walls, Doors and Impact Protective Systems Impacted by Wind Borne Debris in Hurricanes).

Results show a Wind Zone 4 missile impact resistance and negative wind load resistance of -105 psf.

Modern Plastics "Storm Protection Panels" can outperform most competitors' products and are a less-expensive alternative. Super-strong vertical "flutes" sandwiched between polypropylene, offer heavy duty protection. The natural color allows light to enter the home during the day.

This is truly the preferred substrate to replace plywood, OSB and other storm window protection products. Storm Protection Panels are easily stored for repeated usage for years and years of protective service.

Modern Plastics now offers this item for sale in 16mm thick and sheet size of 48" x 96" (other sizes available on a custom order basis). Since these panels are shipped in a sheet size that will need to ship common carrier, your freight charges will be calculated at "TBD" (To Be Determined).
