Ensinger's TECAPEEK™ MT
Ensinger is expanding their testing program for medical grade TECAPEEK to include a 30 percent carbon fiber filled grade. TECAPEEK shapes are produced from Victrex PEEK 450 resin. The carbon fiber filled grades are formulated by Ensinger and are available in extruded shapes, TECAPEEK CF30 and compression molded shapes, TECAPEEK XP 98. Shapes from both processing methods have been submitted to an independent lab for purposes of testing to the biocompatability requirements of the ISO10993 matrix.
ISO 10993 is more specific than the USP Vl testing to determine suitability of a material based on intended use and is the international standard. As with Ensinger TECAPEEK MT which is offered in 6 colors, TECAPEEK CF 30 and TECAPEEK XP98 is tested to the ISO10993 matrix for applications intended to be in contact directly with blood and tissue for less than 24 hours. The matrix identifies that the following tests need to be performed to support the material's use for these type of surgical instruments: maximization / sensitization test, cytotoxity by MEM solution, intracutaneous reactivity, systemic injection and hemolysis test. In submitting new devices to the FDA for approval, it is convenient to submit the material lab reports confirming the biocompatability of the material used to manufacture the device. Copies of these test reports are available from our stocking Medical Elite Distributor, Modern Plastics, for this purpose.
The interest in carbon filled grades of biocompatable plastic materials is for surgical instruments requiring high stiffness while maintaining radiolucency. This would include applications such as retractor blades and target devices.

Solvent "Hypo" Needle Applicator and Bottle
This small applicator is used for capillary cementing, which is the popular way of joining acrylic and polycarbonate sheet. It works because of the ability of solvent type cement to flow through a joint area by capillary action. Properly done, capillary cementing yields a strong, transparent joint.

Vinyl and Acrylic Cements
Modern Plastics has used the IPS WELD*ON® brand of cement products for over 30 years in our own ISO Certified Fabrication Facility and it is the premier choice of product used by professionals for the most critical of applications. You can count on consistent quality with all of the IPS WELD*ON® brand of cement products:
- IPS WELD*ON® 2007 Vinyl Cement is a water-thin, very fast setting solvent cement for bonding PVC, Foamed PVC and Kydex to themselves and to each other.
- IPS WELD*ON® 1001 Vinyl Cement is a thin bodied, slow setting cement for bonding flexible or rigid vinyl, Foamed PVC, acrylic and non plastics to themselves and each other.
- IPS WELD*ON® 3 Acrylic Cement is a non-flammable, water-thin, very fast setting solvent cement for bonding acrylics (Plexiglas®). Also bonds styrene, butyrate, PETG, and polycarbonate (Lexan®). Will not bond to cross-linked acrylics.
- IPS WELD*ON® #705 Clear PVC Pipe Cement is a medium bodied, fast setting PVC cement for all classes and schedules of pipe and fittings with interference fit through 6" diameter. Schedule 80 through 4" diameter. This product may also be used on PVC foam core pipe. Can be used without primer on non-pressure systems if local codes permit.
- IPS WELD*ON® #711 Gray PVC Pipe Cement is a heavy bodied, medium setting PVC cement for all classes and schedules of pipe and fittings with interference fit including schedule 80 through 12" diameter. It has good gap filling properties and its medium set allows more working time in warm weather.
- IPS WELD*ON® #P-70 Clear PVC Pipe Primer is the most aggressive primer commercially available. Excellent product for cold weather applications. If used properly, it will soften the surface of PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings which is necessary for the proper solvent welding of the materials.
