Letter from the PresidentATTENTION TO DETAIL I remember it as if it were yesterday, but it was actually several years ago when we learned an extraordinary lesson. Modern Plastics had been actively pursuing a large Fortune 500 company for quite some time and after a final sales presentation to several staff members, the Senior Buyer, Robert Van Suren, provided the words we had worked so hard to hear; "we've selected Modern Plastics as our supplier." Mr. Van Suren told us to expect an overnight package with a variety of required vendor information that had to be filled out by Modern Plastics and returned back to him within two weeks. Not wanting to wait the two weeks once we had received the 20-page vendor document, we had several staff members at Modern Plastics meticulously scrutinize the documents. We checked for spelling, neatness and that the information requested was provided and 100% accurate. Once we had the document cross-checked several times, we were satisfied that it was in perfect order and ready to send back to Mr. Van Suren. We were proud of the fast turnaround of the paperwork and eager to hear back from Mr. Van Suren. However, after a few days and then another week or so later, we had not heard back from the buyer. I personally wanted to make a call to the buyer but also knew that Mr. Van Suren was a busy person and did not like to be disturbed unnecessarily. We waited another two weeks when I received a voice mail. On the voicemail was a message from Mr. Van Suren and it went like this: "Bing, thank you for your package as I just received it today. As you know, we have thousands of employees at our company and I would have received your package sooner if my full name was on your mailing label. Instead of addressing the package to "Robert Van Suren," your company sent the package out "Attention Bob." Bing, we have thousands of employees and it's a miracle our company was able to get the package over to me. I'm not so sure what that says about the attention to detail at your company." You can only imagine my dismay as I quickly called Mr. Van Suren and apologized for the embarrassing situation we had created. Five years later, we are the sole plastics supplier for this company and have earned a S.T.S. supplier status (Ship to Stock). This supplier designation means that our quality and on-time delivery has been perfect and our shipments free to bypass inspection and go directly to the manufacturing floor. What an important lesson our company learned that day, and Mr. Van Suren could not have said it better: "Attention to Detail." Those words have never left us and it is something that is driven home everyday at Modern Plastics. Such a simple concept, isn't it? Paying attention to those little things that separates an average company from a great company. Trust that we are paying close "attention to details" for our customers. Sincerely, Bing J.
